Job Summary
The
Safety Operator – Abrasive Setup is responsible for ensuring the safe
installation, operation, and monitoring of abrasive blasting systems and
associated equipment during surface preparation activities. The role focuses on
preventing incidents related to high-pressure systems, abrasive materials,
moving equipment, and simultaneous operations, while ensuring full compliance
with offshore HSE standards, permit requirements, and approved work procedures.
The
Safety Operator acts as a frontline safety presence during abrasive setup and
blasting operations, supporting safe execution, hazard control, and operational
discipline in high-risk environments.
Key
Responsibilities
Abrasive
Blasting Safety Oversight
·
Ensure abrasive blasting setups are
installed strictly in accordance with approved procedures, risk assessments,
and manufacturer guidelines.
·
Verify correct positioning and
securing of blast pots, hoses, nozzles, couplings, and ancillary equipment.
·
Monitor abrasive blasting operations
to ensure safe distances, exclusion zones, and barricades are maintained.
·
Ensure correct abrasive materials are
used as specified and handled safely.
·
Prevent unauthorized access into
blasting zones at all times.
Equipment
& Setup Safety
·
Inspect blasting hoses, whip checks,
couplings, valves, and pressure relief systems before commencement of work.
·
Confirm pressure ratings and integrity
of all blasting components prior to pressurization.
·
Ensure emergency shut-off systems are
functional and accessible.
·
Monitor hose routing to prevent trip
hazards, sharp bends, and mechanical damage.
·
Stop operations immediately if unsafe
conditions, leaks, or equipment defects are identified.
Permit
to Work & Compliance
·
Ensure all abrasive blasting
activities are covered by valid Permit to Work (PTW).
·
Verify completion of Job Safety
Analysis (JSA), Task Risk Assessment (TRA), and toolbox talks.
·
Ensure all personnel involved are
competent, authorized, and wearing appropriate PPE.
·
Maintain strict compliance with
client, company, and statutory HSE requirements.
Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) Control
·
Ensure correct PPE is worn by all
blasting personnel, including blast helmets, air-fed respirators, gloves, and
protective clothing.
·
Verify integrity and cleanliness of
breathing air supply systems.
·
Monitor PPE usage throughout
operations and enforce corrective actions where required.
·
Prevent use of damaged or
non-compliant PPE.
SIMOPS
& Area Coordination
·
Coordinate with other work teams to
manage Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS).
·
Ensure abrasive setup does not
conflict with lifting operations, hot work, confined space entry, or live
systems.
·
Maintain communication with
supervisors and control rooms during operations.
·
Ensure dropped object prevention
(DROPS) controls are implemented.
Emergency
Response & Incident Prevention
·
Remain vigilant for unsafe acts, near
misses, or developing hazards.
·
Exercise Stop Work Authority when
unsafe conditions are observed.
·
Support emergency response actions in
the event of equipment failure, injury, or loss of containment.
·
Participate in incident investigations
and implementation of corrective actions.
Documentation
& Reporting
·
Maintain daily safety checklists for
abrasive setups and blasting activities.
·
Record safety observations,
non-conformances, and corrective actions.
·
Report incidents, near misses, and
unsafe conditions promptly.
· Support audits, inspections, and client safety reviews.
