How to Write an ATS-Friendly CV in 2026

August 04, 2026

You found a job that matches your experience perfectly, submitted your CV, and then... nothing.

The truth is, your CV may not have reached the recruiter at all.

Most companies today use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to manage applications. Before a recruiter reviews your CV, the ATS scans it to determine whether your skills and experience match the job requirements. If your CV is difficult for the system to read, it may be filtered out before a human ever sees it.

Here are a few simple ways to make your CV ATS-friendly in 2026:

Keep the design simple — Fancy designs, text boxes, tables, icons, and graphics may look attractive, but many ATS platforms struggle to read them correctly. Stick to a clean layout with clear headings

Use keywords from the job description — if the role requires "Project Management" or "Payroll Administration," include those terms where relevant.

Use standard headings like Work Experience, Education, and Skills.

Avoid creative job titles that systems may not recognize.

Avoid Images and Graphics - Photos, charts, logos, and skill bars rarely add value to your application and can prevent important information from being read correctly.

Save your CV in the Right Format - Unless the employer requests otherwise, submit your CV as a PDF or Word document to preserve formatting and improve compatibility.

Highlight achievements, not just responsibilities — Instead of writing: "Responsible for recruitment activities." Write: "Managed end-to-end recruitment for over 30 positions, reducing average time-to-hire by 20%."

Numbers and measurable results help your CV stand out to recruiters after it passes the ATS stage.

An ATS-friendly CV isn't about beating the system; it's about making your experience easy to find and understand.

Sometimes, simple gets hired faster.
