How to Write a Post-Interview Thank You Note

After researching, preparing and performing well in an interview, to stand out from other candidates, it is required of you to send a ‘thank you’ note to the employer. You might think acing the interview is all you need to land the job, but research has shown that 20% of hiring managers are more likely to hire the candidate that sends a thank you note after the interview.

A post-interview thank you note can be considered as a professional courtesy and can further express you appreciation and interest in the position to the employer. It also gives you the opportunity to reinforce to the employer why you are the most suitable candidate for the position.

So how do you write a thank you note?

Express Appreciation

Begin your thank you note with a sincere appreciation of the opportunity given to you by the interviewer. A good thank you note will bolster a positive response which can tilt the hiring odds in your favor. Expressing gratitude for the interview opportunity shows the employer that you are really interested in working with the organization

Make it Personal and Specific

When writing a thank you note, try as much as possible to personalize the email. Tailor your note to suit the particular individual you are sending it to. For instance, if your interviewer was focused on a particular job requirement or experience lead with that, before proceeding to talk about other things.

Make it Time Sensitive

In order to make your thank your note valid, you must ensure it is written and sent within 24 hours after your interview. Doing it this way makes it easy for the interviewer to remember you and important details from your conversation with him/her.

Reiterate Your Experience and Qualification

Reiterating your experience here simply means highlighting in one or two sentences, key areas of your experience that directly relates to the job role. Use the letter as an opportunity to briefly remind the interviewer of your professional prowess and how they will be beneficial to the organization.

Keep it Brief and Straight to the Point

There’s completely no need to beat around the bush, rather your letter should be concise and straight to the point. Keep it short, so that the employer can go through it without time waste.

Even though most candidates will overlook the importance of sending a thank you note after the interview, take a few minutes to do so, because it might just be the gesture you need to increase your hiring chances
